Abstract |
INTRODUCTION Picky eater is characterized by an unwillingness to try new foods, a dislike of certain types of foods, and strong opinions about food preparation, which result in eating small quantities and a limited variety of food, potentially impacting a child`s growth. METHODS case- control analytical study was held and included 100 children in 3-10 age group (50 case & 50 control) these groups also subdivided by age to (3: less than 4 - 4: less than 6- 6 to less than 8 and 8 to 10 years). cases subjected to 3 nonconsecutive nutritional recall, dietary diversity score, anthropometric measures to identify picky eating subgroups (eating small amount, neophobic, food refusal, food preference to specific preparation). RESULTS cases had significantly lower mean of energy intake than controls in all age groups with significant difference (p<0.05). In picky eating subgroups the highest affection in daily caloric intake was in eating small amounts group (975 kcl/d) and the lowest affection in daily caloric intake was in food preference group (1799 kcl/d), Height significantly affected in all aged groups with (p= 0.001), weight also significantly affected in all age groups with (p=0.002). CONCLUSION Picky eating behavior is a common problem in children in our community& There is a direct impact on nutritional status of picky eaters especially in average daily caloric intake and food verities which affects their growth status. |
